Mural Pricing & Design Fees

Clear pricing creates clear expectations. Below is an overview of how mural projects with Sarah Sheppard / Maxi Haus Studios are typically structured. Each project is custom, but these guidelines help clients understand the value, scope, and process involved.

Travel, Materials & Equipment

For out-of-town projects, travel-related costs are billed separately and may include:

  • Flights or mileage

  • Lodging

  • Rental vehicle

  • Materials and specialty supplies

  • Equipment rentals (lifts, scaffolding, etc.)

A travel and materials deposit is required prior to scheduling and is applied directly to these expenses.

Minimum Project Fee

Due to preparation time, setup, and travel requirements, a minimum project fee applies to all murals, regardless of size.

How Mural Projects Are Priced

Mural pricing is based on several factors, including:

  • Wall size and location (interior vs. exterior)

  • Complexity and level of detail

  • Design and research requirements

  • Travel and logistics

  • Materials, equipment, and preparation needs

Because murals are site-specific, permanent works of art, pricing reflects both creative development and skilled execution.

Design Fee (Concept Development)

All mural projects begin with a non-refundable design fee. This fee covers the creative work completed prior to painting, including:

  • Artistic research and visual references

  • Initial concept development

  • Digital sketches and color studies

  • One to two rounds of revisions

Typical design fees range from $1,000–$1,500, depending on complexity.

The design fee secures your place on my schedule and ensures focused time dedicated to creating a thoughtful, site-specific concept.

Mural Execution Fee

The mural execution fee covers the on-site painting of the approved design and is calculated based on size, detail, and surface conditions.

Professional mural rates typically range from $40–$75+ per square foot.

For reference:

  • A small to mid-size mural (approximately 60 sq ft) generally begins around $4,000 for execution alone.

Final pricing is confirmed once the design is approved and site details are reviewed.

Payment Schedule

A typical payment structure includes:

  1. Design fee (due upfront, non-refundable)

  2. Travel/materials deposit (if applicable)

  3. Remaining mural balance due upon completion
